Hereford

Determination of Polled and Horned:

Recently, mutations associated with the polled phenotype have been found in cattle breeds of European origin. The polled phenotype is dominant, so that a polled animal can have 1 or 2 copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of the polled gene (homozygous) will be polled, but if the bull has only 1 copy of the gene (heterozygous) it will be a carrier of the horned gene. The genetic study determines whether an animal has 1 or 2 copies of the polled gene.
