Introduction:

Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease that affects American Quarter Horses and related breeds (Appaloosas or Palominos). Both heterozygous and homozygous recessive animals will develop the disease. The mutation affects a component of the muscle sodium channels, modifying their normal activity and causing symptoms of paralysis, myotonia, muscle tremors, etc. In our laboratory, we detect the mutation associated with HYPP.
